The 2011 New Zealand Veterinary Association Conference was held at the Claudelands Event Centre with the theme “Back to the Future”. It was the first large conference using every single room of Claudelands, including the new arena and an exhibition hall.
Delegates came from around the world for the conference which included workshops, breakfasts, speakers on many different subjects, a golf tournament and gala dinner. The team thoroughly enjoyed coming up with solutions that helped this event become truly grand.
All hands were on deck as pack in was a two day job for four technicians, there were five technical operators over the four days of the event, and five staff a day were sent in to pack out. Even Tony Dickson, Account Manager had to turn into a Technician for the week and he stayed around till all hours helping the team to set up.
For the dinner every light in Claudelands was taken out of the conference room for use in the arena, and then some! Rigging training came in very handy. The team got to put their new road hog full boar lighting desk into good use and the magnum hazers were put to the test to haze the inside of the arena.
Cables had to be run from a 15 metre high catwalk (which was a new experience for a few of the team), 35 pieces of 3 metre truss and 15 motors were used for the lighting rig, and a total of 68 lights! A 21 x 11 foot widescreen was used for the arena, and a 20k Barco for the plenary and dinner.
The clients came to say thank you for doing a great job and that it looked amazing, which was the icing on the cake of a hugely successful event.
To top off a big March, Vidcom Hamilton installed a full lighting set for the launch of the Ricoh Building:
On 26 February Vidcom Auckland were pleased to supply the Audio Visual and Power requirements for the opening of Auckland's latest tourist destination, Rotoroa island in the Hauraki gulf.
Rotoroa Island has been the Drug and Alcohol “Dry Out” location over the past 100 years, operated by the Salvation Army who have recently sold a 100 year lease to the Rotoroa Island Trust. Over the last 3 years they have planted over 500,000 native shrubs and grasses, and installed several sculptures with more to come. Geoff Claase and Glen Roper had the pleasure of spending a day on the Island to work out just how the opening was going to be run, spending a lot of time working on the power requirements for the event. The team even enjoyed a ride in John’s Sealegs Amphibious craft afterwards (being soaked with water for the afternoon was a small price to pay!).
Preparation was such that the team had to be thorough, as access to the island was extremely restricted. Technicians Tim Huston and Glenn Ellis enjoyed taking the Vidcom van across on the ferry and setting up, then spending the afternoon at the beach. Early the following morning guests arrived by private helicopter and numerous watercraft for Mayor of Auckland Len Brown’s opening. Everything ran smoothly and the technicians came back to work completely refreshed, like they had had a couple of days holiday! All in all a well planned and executed event, with compliments from the clients and guests. Visit www.rotoroa.org.nz for more information on this new tourist destination.
